Why the River?

The San Marcos River is known for its habitual use for the people of Texas. The river was what led settlers and travelers to central Texas. For 13,000 years, it is the longest continuing inhabited place in North America. The river has about eight endangered organisms such as the Texas blind salamander and the fountain darter fish. Through much help of conserving the river and making it resourceful for years to come, the Texas Wild Rice Festival celebrates the San Marcos to show others and teach nature conservation.
